Sony announced it passed 25 million units sold in November 2022, and presumably sold about five million more consoles in December 2022 alone. In Sony's press conference, Ryan said supply improved steadily toward the end of 2022. It took until August 2022 to be deemed " almost easy to buy." Mostly, obtaining a PS5 required getting very lucky in an on-the-spot release of new supply, or being willing to pay significantly more than the console's MSRP. Other supply chain issues prompted by the global coronavirus pandemic didn't help. A semiconductor chip shortage limited Sony's production of new PS5 consoles. The console was released in November 2020, but was very difficult to obtain for most of its lifespan. "Everyone who wants a PS5 should have a much easier time finding one at retailers globally starting from this point forward," said Ryan, the President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, as part of Sony's 2023 Consumer Electronics Show. He noted that December 2022 was the "biggest month ever" for the console's sales. The company's gaming boss, Jim Ryan, said on Wednesday that Sony has now sold 30 million PS5's worldwide. Sony announced that its PlayStation 5 shortage is essentially over. Although PC ports are somewhat inevitable, this price increase comes at a time when many may have been looking to upgrade to Sony's current-gen console, as upcoming first-party exclusives such as Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will be PS5 exclusives as opposed to releasing on the PlayStation 4 as well. The new Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console is seen for sale on the first day of its launch, at an electronics shop in Kawasaki, Kanagawa prefecture on November 12, 2020. While Ryan's post makes sense from a business perspective for Sony, many players who were hoping they'd be able to pick up a PlayStation 5 once the price drops over time will likely be disappointed. With the current supply scarcity of the PlayStation 5 and the new price increase, some players might now be considering whether or not they will just opt to wait for a ported version to come to PC. This move has already been a huge success with acclaimed titles such as God of War and Marvel's Spider-Man: Remastered. However, this may not be the case for much longer, as Jim Ryan had previously announced that Sony aimed to move 50% of PlayStation's exclusive games onto PC to reach a larger market. One of the PlayStation's major selling points was its exclusive games library, with that being the main reason players would cite for purchasing a PlayStation over an Xbox console.
